Licensed Professional Counselor
Pronouns: She/Her/Ella

I identify as a Black feminist and womanist. I am a cisgender Lesbian woman and elder-millennial. I was born and raised in the South, specifically the mountains of Virginia. I know what it’s like to have first hand experience in navigating invalidation and oppression both in Appalachia and the Deep South.

Background & Approach

Hey, yall! I’m Winter Foddrell, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), DBT skills group co-leader for The Clearing, and the founder and director of Revolution Psychotherapy, a private practice dedicated to supporting clients in understanding, accepting and pursuing their mental health as a revolutionary act. My passion is in working with all women, folx who identify as BIPOC, members of the LGBTQ+ community and other persons who hold marginalized identities. I am very devoted to social justice, anti-racism, decolonizing therapy, and liberation healing practices.

My approach to DBT skills groups is the same as my approach to individual therapy. Specifically, I encourage group members to achieve balance in their lives through the DBT concepts of acceptance and growth. I feel it is important to empower group members with real-world skills and the practice of mindfulness and self-care, as a means to increase self-respect while navigating invalidating and oppressive environments. In my role as a co-leader, I work collaboratively with Clerissa to teach skills, and support group members in decreasing in the moment barriers to learning and practicing skills learning so that they may cultivate an understanding of their own experiences and do the best they can to be the most skillful version of themselves.

I trust the power of acceptance and genuineness, and I believe that when we are true to self, growth and healing can naturally occur. I live by the principle of authenticity and honesty, which means I communicate in a thoughtful, direct and transparent way, while being non-judgmental, compassionate and empathetic.

Theoretical & Clinical Orientation

I view people as multimodal and therefore a one-size fits all approach to therapy isn’t my style. I prefer to blend my formal and evidence-based training of Dialectical Behavior Therapy with the brain and body based trauma psychotherapy of Brainspotting to support folx in their journey toward healing.

My personal belief and approach to psychotherapy is based on the “personal as political” and the idea of the connection between personal experiences and social justice issues. Feminist psychotherapy, liberation healing practices and concepts, and psychodynamic psychotherapy heavily influence the ways in which I support folx both individually and in group therapy.
